Jury to consider death penalty in strip club killing

Penalty phase of murder trial to begin Wednesday for Deangelo Carroll

A Clark County jury next week will begin considering whether to impose the death penalty on a man found guilty in the 2005 shooting death of a doorman at a North Las Vegas strip club.

The jury will consider whether to give Deangelo Carroll, 29, the death sentence, life with parole or life without parole for killing Timothy Hadland, who was said to have bad-mouthed the Palamino Club to local cab drivers.

After listening to testimony in a trial that began May 17, the jury this week found Carroll guilty of murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder.

The penalty phase of the trial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday before Judge Valerie Adair.

Carroll was one of several people accused of killing Hadland near Lake Mead after Hadland was fired from his job as a doorman at the club. The owners of the club said Hadland made derogatory remarks to cab drivers about the club and the comments had hurt business.

The prosecution alleged Carroll was paid for the killing.

The Nevada Supreme Court allowed his death penalty case to go forward despite a faulty filing by the District Attorney's Office.

Kenneth Counts, one of those accused of shooting Hadland, was convicted of conspiracy. Jayson Taoipu pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Anabel Espindola, the manager of the club, also pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge.

Luis Hidalgo Jr., the former owner of the club, and his son, Luis Hidalgo III, were sentenced in June 2009 to life in prison
