A jury returns to court Tuesday to hear more testimony as it decides whether James Biela should be sentenced to death for the murder of Brianna Denison and the sexual assault of two other women near the University of Nevada, Reno.
The same jury last week convicted Biela of raping and strangling the 19-year-old Denison.
Biela's lawyers say the mitigating factors they are presenting in the case in a bid to spare Biela's life are not meant to justify or in any way excuse the horrible crimes he committed.
But they say there are reasons not to vote for the death penalty in the case, including testimony about Biela's abusive father.
Prosecutors say the bottom line is that Biela alone is to blame for what happened.
