Las Vegas City Council to vote on pay cuts for corrections officers

New contract with city would save $3.6 million over two years

The Las Vegas City Council is expected to OK an agreement Wednesday with the union representing city corrections officers that includes wage rollbacks of 1.5 percent in 2011 and another 1.5 percent in 2012.

The changes, along with changes in contracts with its other unions, would help the city cut its personnel budget by more than $36 million during the next two years.

“I am very proud that the city and all of its unions have been able to find common ground in these difficult economic times,” City Manager Betsy Fretwell said in remarks released by the city.

“The POA leadership and members demonstrated sacrifice and courage in helping to keep the city fiscally strong, in preserving critical services and in saving city jobs,” Fretwell said.

Members of the Police Officers Association, which represents corrections officers and sergeants, approved the new contract agreement with the city on Nov. 8 by a vote of 121-34, according to the city.

The council is scheduled to take up the matter at its regular meeting Wednesday. If approved, the agreement would go into effect in June when the current agreement expires.

The cutbacks would save the city more than $3.6 million over the next two years, the city said.

Even more savings are expected in years to come, due to reductions in pay and benefits for new hires, according to the city.

Highlights of the agreement include:

• Suspending step increases and cost of living adjustment for two years.

• Freezing longevity pay for two years.

• Ending allowances for uniforms.

• Rolling back wages 1.5 percent in June 2011.

• Rolling back wages 1.5 percent in June 2012.

Also, new employees hired after June 2011 will see a reduction in steps and entry-level pay and pay half of their Public Employees Retirement System contributions.
