If you’ve heard one Explosions in the Sky song, you’ve basically heard them all: three-guitar mini-epics that creep from quiet to loud then recede back down to quiet. They make for good atmosphere while reading, writing or laying in the dark thinking, not so much for driving if you’re the least bit tired. Take Care, Take Care, Take Care picks up where 2007’s All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone left off, built around slightly better melodies but still without the explosions promised by the Texas quartet’s name. With more intensity on their upswells, “Last Known Surroundings” and “Postcard From 1952” might have been must-share caliber; as it is only finishing track “Let Me Back In” qualifies, mostly on the strength of an actual new wrinkle, whispery-weird background vocals that bubble to the surface here and there. Nothing says Explosions in the Sky needs to mess with its formula further, but nothing says we need to buy the same album every few years, either.
