Man charged with child abuse after 11-year-old shoots, kills 5-year-old

Sidney Jacobs, 37, of Henderson was charged with child abuse in connection with an incident where an 11-year-old boy shot and killed a 5-year-old with a gun he thought was a toy, Dec. 13, 2011.

Felony child abuse charges have been filed against a Henderson man who owns the home where an 11-year-old boy shot and killed a 5-year-old boy with a gun he found in a box marked “treasure chest.”

Sidney Jacobs, 37, surrendered himself to the Henderson Detention Center on Friday on a felony count of child endangerment, according to Henderson Police. Jacobs was released after posting $10,000 bail.

The incident occurred on Sept. 25, when the two boys were brought to Jacobs’ house on the 500 block of Lairmont Drive near Macdonald Ranch Drive and Stephanie Street, police said.

The 11-year-old boy told police he thought the gun he removed from a box of toys was just another toy. He pointed it at the 5-year-old and fired, police said.

The 5-year-old who was shot in the chest and taken to St. Rose Hospital, Siena Campus, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The mother of the 5-year-old is also sister to the 11-year-old, police said. She had gone to visit with Jacobs and his girlfriend.

Authorities found that the loaded handgun was in a box marked “treasure chest” inside a child’s playroom, police said.

Detectives also found numerous loaded and unsecured guns in different rooms throughout the house, as well as an open gun safe with a child’s plastic toy gun inside, police said.
