Nevada Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz had a good excuse for not attending Monday sessions at the Nevada Legislature.
Diaz and her husband welcomed the birth of their son, Xavier Carson, who was born at 11:52 a.m. Sunday at Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City.
More than a week overdue, he weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 20 inches long.
The boy is the first baby for Diaz, a freshman Democrat and elementary school teacher from North Las Vegas. She is married to Frank Alejandre and has two stepsons.
Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick says Diaz plans to return to her legislative duties as soon as possible.
