Cameron M. Batjer, a justice of the Nevada Supreme Court from 1967 until 1981 and who later served on the U.S. Parole Commission, died Wednesday in Reno at the age of 91.

Batjer grew up in Smith in Lyon County, graduated from UNR and became a teacher. He then got his law degree from the University of Utah.

When the Supreme Court was enlarged from three to five members, he was appointed by then-Gov. Paul Laxalt. After his retirement from the court, Batjer was named to the federal parole commission by President Reagan, where he served until 1990.

Chief Justice Michael Douglas said, “The even-handed temperament of Justice Cameron Batjer will be missed in today’s partisan world.”

Justice Ron Parraguirre called Batjer “an extremely bright, compassionate man” and said Nevada has “lost a true gentleman who was a credit to the Supreme Court.”

Justice Kristina Pickering called Batjer a “great scholar and jurist who understood the virtue of brevity, common sense and kindness.”

Before being appointed to the Supreme Court, he was district attorney in Carson City and had also been in private practice. Funeral services are pending.
