North Las Vegas offers parents gang-prevention classes

The North Las Vegas Police Department is seeking families to participate in a six-week course to combat youth delinquency, violence and gang membership.

Now in its fourth year, the Gang Resistance Education and Training program is being offered to 10 families with one or more children ages 10 to 14.

The free course will be held Tuesday nights beginning March 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Community Services Building, 3425 W. Craig Road. The class is available on a first-come, first-served basis to North Las Vegas residents, who must commit to the full six weeks.

The G.R.E.A.T. program is typically taught to students in classrooms, and is funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, and Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Agency.

The family version of the G.R.E.A.T. program will teach at-home lessons such as overcoming communication barriers between children and their guardians, the benefit of parental monitoring, effective discipline, improving listening skills within the family, coping in an electronic age and Internet safety.

Interested families should contact the North Las Vegas Police Department at 702-633-1970 by Friday to apply.
