Nevada Supreme Court receives its 60,000th case

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court says it has reached a landmark: the 60,000th case has been lodged in the court since statehood in 1864.

It took 112 years from statehood to August 1977 for the first 10,000 cases to be appealed to the court. Since then, appeals have come faster and grown more complicated, Chief Justice Nancy Saitta said.

“The appeals we are seeing today are complex and diverse,” Saitta said, adding that the growing numbers and the intricate issues make it difficult to reach decisions immediately.

The 60,000th appeal involved a complex homeowner association case with 75 defendants.

The chief justice said Nevada is just one of 11 states without an intermediate court of appeals, meaning the Supreme Court must resolve all such cases.

Saitta said the Supreme Court will push for an intermediate court of appeals, a plan defeated by the voters in 2010 by 51.1 to 46.5 percent.
