Former Rebel defensive back Quinton Pointer will play in The Battle of Florida All-Star game, it was announced Thursday.

The game, held on Jan. 21 at Florida Atlantic University Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla., features only college players with ties to the Sunshine State. Pointer will play on the North team, which will be led by former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. Howard Schnellenberger, who won a national title at Miami and just retired after 11 seasons at FAU, will lead the South squad. The game is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. PT and be televised by Fox College Sports.

Pointer, a native of Fort Myers, Fla., was one of two team captains this season. He played cornerback and safety, finishing fourth on the team with 59 tackles and tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles and two interceptions.

“I’m excited to get back out on the field,” said Pointer, who is the only Mountain West player on either roster. “I’m most excited about being able to play in front of a lot of my family and friends for the first time since high school.”

Pointer earned his bachelor's degree last May and recently was honored with the team's Rene Arceneaux Award, which is given to a player who has demonstrated exemplary improvement in academic progress.
