A suspected drug dealer died Wednesday night after he ingested a bag believed to contain cocaine during a vehicle stop, Metro Police said.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the man as 43-year-old Anthony Barrett, of Las Vegas, who died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

The coroner has not determined an official cause and manner of death.

Police said patrol officers were helping narcotics detectives conduct the vehicle stop at 7:55 p.m. near Sahara Avenue and Nellis Boulevard.

Narcotics detectives learned the suspect planned to sell cocaine in his possession, police said.

As officers approached the suspect’s vehicle, he ingested the bag believed to contain cocaine, police said.

Officers summoned medical assistance as they took him into custody, police said. The man was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he later died, police said.

Detectives from Metro’s force investigations team responded and opened an investigation, police said.
