One man and a 2-year-old boy have died after the pair fell off a raft at Six Mile Cove in Lake Mohave, park rangers said.

At 11:18 a.m., Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials received a call that one 36-year-old male and the boy were floating in the water at Six Mile Cove. Neither of them were wearing a life jacket at the time.

Bystanders pulled them out of the water and performed CPR until rangers arrived. Rangers continued medical care until the arrival of medics, who pronounced the man dead by presumed drowning.

The child was flown to a Las Vegas-area hospital in critical condition. He had not been breathing.

“I try and stress at all times to wear your life jackets and, in addition, always keep sight of your children,” said Assistant Chief Ranger Randy Lavasseur.

He added that park visitors should also stay hydrated and keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Park rangers are still investigating the incident.
