Extra police, colors ban at Nevada motorcycle rally

sparks shooting

Officers receive instruction on the east side of John Ascuaga’s Nugget after a shooting, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, in Sparks. One person has been killed and two others wounded in a shooting at a hotel-casino in Sparks that witnesses say involved members of rival motorcycle gangs, the Vagos and Hells Angels.

After a fatal shootout erupted at last year's northern Nevada motorcycle rally during a brawl between rival motorcycle gangs, organizers are cracking down on this year's event.

The 19th annual Street Vibrations rally, which starts Wednesday, draws thousands of motorcyclists and tourists to hotels and casinos in Reno, Sparks and Virginia City.

The Reno-Gazette-Journal reports (on.rgj.com/Pp5ui9) organizers, police and a number of participating casinos are enforcing a colors ban this year in an attempt to keep the event safe.

Casinos are also pledging to enforce policies banning weapons on the property and barring minors from the gambling floors.

The event's organizers are also bringing in extra police and beefing up security.

The rally ends on Sunday.
