A former Las Vegas-area elected official is due in a California court on felony charges stemming from a freeway chase that ended with a violent struggle with police the same day he was expelled from the Nevada state Assembly.

Steven Brooks faces an evidence hearing Tuesday in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Barstow to determine whether he'll go to trial on charges including resisting an officer, felony evading and assault on a police animal.

Brooks pleaded not guilty a week ago. He could face more than five years in prison if he's convicted.

The March 28 arrest on Interstate 15 near Victorville was Brooks' third this year.

It came just hours after the Democrat from North Las Vegas became the first Nevada lawmaker ever ousted from the Legislature.
