Senate bill bans minors from tanning salons

The Nevada Senate has passed a bill making it illegal for teens younger than 18 to use tanning salons.

SB267 was approved Monday on a vote of 17-4. It now goes to the Assembly.

The original bill called for parental consent before a minor could use a tanning salon, but an amendment changed the language to make it stricter.

Salons that do allow minors could face civil liability from parents.

Democratic Sen. Joyce Woodhouse of Henderson says the effort is to protect Nevada's children from skin cancer.

Opponents complained the law was an egregious example of over-reaching government.

But six out of the 10 Republicans in the Senate voted with the Democratic majority to pass the bill.
