County to receive $6.6 million to fight homelessness

Clark County will receive about $6.6 million from the federal government to support regional efforts addressing homelessness.

The county, which received the same amount of money last year, today announced the award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The funds will go toward programs that support the homeless, including permanent and transitional housing programs.

“More than 33,000 Southern Nevadans including families with children, couples and individuals of all ages will be homeless at some point this year,” SNRPC Regional Initiatives Coordinator and state Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson said in a statement. “But thanks to the many great programs and services funded by this grant we are making a difference.”

The county announced two meetings on Aug. 12 and 13 for local organizations hoping to receive grant money next year. At the meetings, prospective applicants will learn about funding requirements and expectations.

The meetings are scheduled from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 12 and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 13. Both meetings will be in the third-floor training room at the Clark County Social Service Department building, 1600 Pinto Lane.
