New health district head turns down job after appointment

The leading candidate for the Southern Nevada Health District's chief health officer position withdrew his application Tuesday due to a family matter, according to a statement from the district.

Dr. Thomas Coleman, the district's current director of community health, withdrew his application for the position after being tapped as the leading candidate to take over the position last week.

The committee to select the new chief health officer will meet next on August 15.

The district’s board voted July 30 to name Coleman its chief hospital officer and enter into contract negotiations. His formal appointment was expected at the board’s Aug. 22 meeting.

Coleman, had been with the health district since 2011, most recently serving as director of community health. Before joining the health district, Coleman served as director of the Volusia County Health Department in Daytona Beach, Fla. He has a medical degree from from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Science in biostatistics and epidemiology from UNC's School of Public Health.

The chief health officer is responsible for overseeing a 500-person staff spread across four divisions that deal with a range of public health information and enforcement issues in Clark County.

Dr. John Middaugh has served as the interim chief health officer since Lawrence Sands resigned in June 2012.
