Driver who caused major pileup on Desert Inn Road was under influence, police say

A woman involved in a car collision Thursday that led to a five-car pileup on Desert Inn Road is suspected of driving under the influence, Metro Police officials said.

Officers responded to the pileup about 2:20 p.m. at Desert Inn Road, near Sandhill Road. Angela Mageras, 37, is suspected of driving under the influence, a Metro accident report said.

The collision occurred when Mageras, who was driving a Toyota Scion TC, drifted into oncoming traffic on Desert Inn Road, the report said. Mageras crashed into a car traveling in the center travel lane, starting the chain reaction of collisions.

A minivan traveling behind the car crashed into Mageras next, which sent Mageras into another car in the left travel lane. Meanwhile, a van driving behind the minivan couldn’t avoid crashing into its rear, the report said.

The force of the initial collision ejected the minivan driver through the window, the report said. The driver of the minivan was transported to the hospital in critical condition, while several others involved in the crash were also transported with minor to critical injuries.

The pileup shut down Desert Inn Road for seven hours. Metro Police Accident Section is investigating the incident.
