Feds: Man held in Reno supported India terrorism

U.S. officials in Nevada say a 39-year-old citizen of India who was arrested in Reno helped plot terror strikes in the Punjab region of his home country on the border with Pakistan.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden and FBI Special Agent in Charge Laura Bucheit said Wednesday that the arrest of Balwinder Singh disrupted his support of two terrorist organizations.

The officials say the groups known as the Babbar Khalsa International and Khalistan Zindabad Force aim to establish an independent Sikh state in the Khalistan region.

Singh was arrested Tuesday and indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Reno on charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and several immigration fraud charges.

He's due for an initial court appearance Friday.

He could face life in prison if he's convicted.
