Holiday Safety:

Metro emphasizes safety, sobriety for holiday weekend

Fourth of July

Tourists and locals watch Fourth of July fireworks on the Strip.

With more than 70 events scheduled throughout the Las Vegas Valley for the Fourth of July, Metro Police are ramping up patrols and asking the public to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.

At a press conference Wednesday morning, Metro Capt. Chris Jones announced that police would step up pressure on the Strip and attempt to have officers at all Fourth of July events throughout the extended weekend. Jones also asked for the public's help in identifying possible threats at any event, whether it's a soccer match or firework display.

"We would rather you call us and be wrong than not call us and have something happen," he said.

Metro officers also will conduct a sobriety checkpoint between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday somewhere on Blue Diamond Road, Metro Sgt. Rich Robinson said. Though the exact location is still being finalized, the area was chosen due to a high number of accidents and impaired drivers in the past, he said.

Though Metro is not investigating any known threats to Fourth of July celebrations at this time, Jones asked that members of the public stay aware of suspicious or unusual behavior, such as a person not paying attention or appearing disinterested in a large public event.

Jones also asked the public to observe firework safety and regulations. Fireworks are prohibited on city, county, state, federal and School District property, including streets, parks and parking lots.
