Man gets 40 years to life in Las Vegas murder case

A 38-year-old Las Vegas man has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for killing his former girlfriend's live-in boyfriend in April 2007.

Court records show that Christopher O. Smith was sentenced Tuesday after a Clark County District Court jury found him guilty in March of murder with use of a deadly weapon and burglary in the shooting of 30-year-old Marquell Deon James.

James lived at the time at a home southwest of Las Vegas with Smith's ex-girlfriend, Dawn Culver, and their 14-year-old daughter.

Prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci says Smith and James had been roommates.

Smith was convicted of shooting James dead when he found out about James' relationship with Culver.
