Traffic Accidents:

Metro records 51st fatality this year after pedestrian is struck, killed near UNLV

Pedestrian killed

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car near the UNLV campus on Monday morning, Metro Police said.

Metro responded to a call of a sedan hitting an adult male around 3:44 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Wilbur Street, just south of the UNLV campus. Investigators closed Tropicana Avenue for several hours while investigating the incident, Metro office Laura Meltzer said. The road has since been reopened.

The pedestrian, who did not appear to be in a crosswalk while crossing the street, was struck by a Nissan Sentra traveling west on Tropicana Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene, Meltzer said. Metro is still investigating the incident but did not issue a citation or arrest for the 25-year-old driver, who remained at the scene, she said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will identify the deceased upon notification of next of kin.

According to Metro, this is the 51st traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction for 2013.
