Fires:

Boxes left atop stove cause blaze, send resident packing

Torrey Pines house fire

An accidental house fire caused around $100,000 in damage after a malfunctioning stove ignited several cardboard boxes in the home's kitchen Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the blaze after neighbors reported seeing smoke from the home's windows around 7:40 a.m. in the 400 block of Torrey Pines Drive, near Washington Avenue and Jones Boulevard, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Responders were able to put the blaze out before 8 a.m., but not before the fire gutted the kitchen and significantly damaged the building's attic, he said.

The fire appears to have been started when a woman moving into the home placed several boxes atop a stove for storage before calling for the power to be turned off, Szymanski said. Either the stove was left on or somehow malfunctioned, causing the boxes to ignite and start the fire when the power was turned on, he said.

The woman, who wasn't home at the time of the fire, told fire officials she would move back to her prior residence, Szymanski said.
