Gov. Brian Sandoval says he had a "frank and blunt" discussion with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz over proposed shipments of nuclear waste to Nevada.

Sandoval spoke with Moniz for about 15 minutes Thursday by telephone. The conversation came after the Republican governor sent two letters asking for a meeting to discuss plans by the Department of Energy to ship 403 canisters of radioactive waste from Oak Ridge, Tenn., to the Nevada National Security site northwest of Las Vegas for shallow burial.

Sandoval and others the site isn't appropriate for radioactive material that could be used to make a "dirty bomb." They also oppose transporting the waste in and around Las Vegas.

The governor says he and Moniz "agreed to disagree" on specific points but committed to having further discussions.
