Nevada 2nd highest in country for middle age suicide

New government data show Nevada has the second-highest suicide rate in the country among people aged 35 to 64, although the rise in the rate was much slower than it was nationally.

The 319 suicides among middle-aged people in Nevada in 2010 marked a nearly 12 percent increase from a decade earlier. But that's less than the 28 percent rate increase nationwide, and marked the fourth-slowest rise among states.

The uptick came during a period that included the recession and the mortgage crisis.

Nevada's rate of 29 suicides per 100,000 residents aged 35-64 is behind only Wyoming.

The report was released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nevada reported 197 middle-aged adult suicides in 1999, when it had the highest rate in the country for that group.
