Strong winds expected through evening; air-quality advisory issued

Because of expected strong winds, Clark County officials are warning of the possibility of blowing dust this afternoon and evening.

Unhealthy levels of dust have not been reported, but the county Department of Air Quality is sending notices to construction sites, asking operators to take precautions to avoid blowing dust.

Department of Air Quality officials will monitor conditions and post an alert on the forecast page of the DAQ website if unhealthy levels occur.

The National Weather Service is forecasting winds of about 22 mph this afternoon, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Winds are expected this evening from 16 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

Under windy conditions, localized or valley-wide areas of blowing dust are likely to occur. Airborne dust can aggravate respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma. It may be best for children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases to stay indoors during dust storms.
