4 men indicted in string of robberies

Four men arrested in connection with a string of street robberies in southwest Las Vegas -- including one man who turned himself in -- were indicted on 23 counts Friday.

Metro Police arrested Calvin Smith, 20; Christopher Blye, 20; Josue Torres, 18; and Daniel Spencer, 21, on May 9 in relation to the robberies. The men are alleged to have robbed eight different people in Southwest Las Vegas in April and May at gunpoint, according to a Metro Police arrest report.

The report indicates the following:

The nighttime street robberies all began the same way. Four men between 18 and 21 years old would jump out of a dark SUV with one headlight and stop a citizen at gunpoint. One held a shotgun and another brandished a handgun. They stole everything on the person -- purses, phones, wads of cash -- and then drove away.

From April 27 to May 9, the same crew robbed eight people in similar fashion. One couple was followed into their gated community late at night after leaving a casino and robbed in their garage. The suspects stole a purse, credit cards, two phones and $220.

In another incident, three of the suspects attacked three people who were told to get on the ground and empty their pockets. They stole cash, iPhones, and kicked one of the victims in the head.

One victim was robbed as he was walking home from work. The suspects stole $300 to $400, four $2 bills and his work apron.

They took turns robbing people and kept the money only when they robbed someone.

Police tracked the suspects’ vehicle down and arrested Blye and Smith, who were in the front seats. Police arrested Torres, who was walking in the area and matched a description of one of the suspects. Officers checked the location from where Torres was walking from and found a shotgun in the bushes.

Spencer turned himself in.

Spencer admitted to police that he was present during all of the robberies and participated in some. He claimed he needed the money and used an empty shotgun. He said there was only one pistol, which was a pellet gun.

Smith admitted that he was riding around Summerlin with Spencer, Torres and Blye and witnessed the robberies, but he denied taking part in them.

According to the Clark County District Court indictment, Smith, Torres, Blye and Spencer were charged with the following: 10 counts of assault with use of a deadly weapon; seven counts of robbery with a deadly weapon; two counts each of burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, and robbery with use of a deadly weapon; one count each of conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery with use of a deadly weapon victim 60 years of age or older, and battery with intent to commit a crime.
