Father of ex-UCLA star Shabazz Muhammad charged with Las Vegas mortgage scam

The father of former UCLA basketball star Shabazz Muhammad has been charged with bank fraud and conspiracy in an alleged Las Vegas housing scam.

Ronald J. Holmes pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges. He remains jailed Friday and an early morning call to his lawyer wasn't immediately returned.

His 20-year-old son was a top-rated college basketball recruit last year. Muhammad left UCLA this spring to prepare for the NBA draft.

An indictment unsealed Thursday contends that Holmes used phony information and straw buyers to obtain and sell at least three Las Vegas homes between 2006 and 2009, netting more than $2.5 million.

In 2000, Holmes was sentenced to six months of house arrest for using fraudulent bank statements to obtain mortgages in Los Angeles County.
