Smoke from the Powerhouse Fire is visible from the Saugus neighborhood of Santa Clarita, Calif., Thursday, May 30, 2013. The fire in the Angeles National Forest surged to 1,000 acres after burning for about four hours, the U.S. Forest Service said, sending out big clouds of black smoke amid temperatures in the high 80s and winds gusting at more than 20 mph.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — A wildfire in the mountains north of Los Angeles has been slowed by morning overcast but authorities say about 25 homes have been evacuated as scattered flames continue to leap hillsides.

Authorities Friday morning ordered homes evacuated on San Francisquito Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest north of Castaic.

Residents of another 200 homes were allowed to return Thursday night.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy says the 1,400-acre blaze is 15 percent contained and is making only small runs up slopes in the Green Valley area.

However, the cool morning is expected to give way to hot, dry weather with light wind gusts that could fan the flames. There's also concern that power lines in the area could make it harder for air tankers to attack.
