Report: Las Vegas hospital fell short on TB safeguards

State investigators say Summerlin Hospital wasn't taking proper precautions when a mother with tuberculosis visited one of her twin babies in the intensive care unit.

A report from the Nevada Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance shows a doctor spoke with the parents at the baby's bedside May 31, even though the mother had been running a fever of 103 and didn't know why she was sick.

A nurse said months later that parents would have been discouraged from visiting or advised to wear a gown and mask if they were sick. But the report says it was unclear whether the mother wore the protective gear when she visited.

The mother and one baby died of tuberculosis. Health officials have been testing to determine whether other patients were infected.
