Cooking fire does $50,000 damage, kills family dog

A family of four was forced from their apartment and their dog died Sunday in a cooking-grease fire that gutted the kitchen and living room.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded about 4:30 p.m. to the Playa Vista apartment complex in the 3700 block of East Bonanza Road, near Pecos Road.

A female occupant was cooking on the stove when she heard a small explosion on the stove and the fire started, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters found flames and smoke coming from the front window of the upstairs apartment, Szymanski said. The woman was able to escape without injury, but firefighters found a pet dog in a back bedroom that apparently died from smoke inhalation.

The fire caused about $50,000 damage to the home. Investigators determined the fire was caused by cooking grease and ruled it accidental.
