A man who collapsed while hiking today at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has died, Metro Police reported.

The incident happened about 1:45 p.m. along Ice Box Canyon Trail. A 911 caller reported that a man in his mid-70s collapsed and needed medical attention, Metro Lt. Mark Reddon said.

Metro’s search and rescue unit responded and found the man about a mile from the trailhead, Reddon said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the man's death, but police said it appeared he suffered a medical episode, possibly caused by overexertion.

Ice Box Canyon Trail is a 2.6-mile hike of moderate difficulty. The trail meanders through a cool and shady box canyon, according to the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association.
