One of seven men convicted in a notorious tourist killing in New York City is making a new bid for exoneration, nearly a quarter-century later.
Johnny Hincapie's (een-KAH'-pih-ayz) lawyers filed papers Monday seeking a new trial for him in the death of Brian Watkins.
The 22-year-old Watkins was killed defending his mother from a subway-platform mugging in September 1990.
The family was in town from Provo, Utah, to attend the U.S. Open tennis tournament.
The 41-year-old Hincapie has unsuccessfully challenged his conviction before. The new filing cites new evidence: a sworn statement from an exonerated co-defendant saying that Hincapie also wasn't involved.
Hincapie also maintains police coerced him into confessing.
There was no immediate response from the Manhattan DA's office.
