California man arrested in terrorism investigation

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A Southern California man was arrested Friday on an indictment alleging he was attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida, the FBI said.

The agency said in a statement that Sinh Vinh Ngo Nguyen, 24, of Garden Grove, was arrested while waiting to board a bus to Mexico.

Nguyen, a U.S. citizen, was also indicted on a charge of making false statements in an application for a passport to facilitate an act of international terrorism, the statement said.

The indictment does not add any details on the act of terrorism that authorities allege was being facilitated.

The FBI statement says investigators do not believe Nguyen was traveling with others, and the agency is not aware of a continuing threat to the public.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller declined to provide additional details.

Nguyen is expected to appear in federal court in Santa Ana on Friday afternoon. A message seeking comment was left for his lawyer, Amy Karlin.
