Former Las Vegas doctor gets life sentence in hepatitis C case

Desai Hearing

Dr. Dipak Desai appears in court for a competency hearing Friday, Jan. 27, 2012.

A former Las Vegas doctor has been ordered to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 18 years following his criminal convictions in a 2007 hepatitis C outbreak.

Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair sentenced 63-year-old Dipak Desai at a hearing Thursday.

He was found guilty in July of 27 criminal charges, including second-degree murder, in a viral outbreak that officials traced to his clinics and called one of the largest ever in the U.S.

Desai was found guilty in the death of 77-year-old Rodolfo Meana in April 2012.

Prosecutors argued that Desai created a penny-pinching work environment that emphasized profits over patient safety, leading to unsafe clinic and injection practices and the spread of the blood-borne virus.
