Kevin Janison is no stranger to making predictions. After all, he’s spent nearly two decades in Las Vegas trying to forecast something much more important to most people than football games – the weather.
Sure, the Chase for the Golden Nerf and picking football games is fun, but if you’re looking for some prognostication that actually can have an effect on you, tune in to KSNV Channel 3, where everything is sunny for Janison these days.
“Life at 3 is good. We’re doing a lot of new things, and they haven’t thrown me in the dungeon yet,” Janison said. “In April, it’ll be 20 years since my first weathercast in Las Vegas, and I really love this community. There are so many positives that I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. The funny thing about the weather in Las Vegas is that it impacts people daily. Not necessarily with the life-or-death situations that you may find elsewhere, but clouds, temps and especially the winds tend to impact daily activities, so we know the viewers are tuning in.”
Janison is also pretty easy to find when he’s not standing in front of that green screen.
“I’ve always thought it was important that if people think enough of you to invite you to their community event, you should make every effort to be involved,” he said. “I visit quite a few schools each year, emcee charity fundraising dinners and participate in charity walks. I hope my contributions, little as they are, help others.”
Sometimes during his school visits, he’ll read from his favorite collection of children’s books, following the adventures of Deputy Dorkface. And with good reason – he’s also the author of the series (check out his books at DeputyDorkface.com).
“I’m having so much fun with the Deputy Dorkface books. These were bedtime stories I told my kids when they were young, and they’ve just taken off from there. Last week, we received word that we’ve been honored with two separate awards. Very cool! We’re getting requests to give the school author presentations from Oregon to North Carolina,” Janison said.
“I like to describe the stories as positive life lessons/adventures, evolving from observational comedy. Whose kids haven’t been too full for dinner but find plenty of room for dessert? I’m very excited with the response, interest and attention we’re receiving … plus looking forward to the release of the fourth adventure on February 15.”
Janison’s character is a hit with children, and that’s a good thing – because he hasn’t exactly written the book recently on picking football winners in the Chase for the Golden Nerf. However, like the weather, you never know when that could change.
“I love sports betting, and as my record shows, I stink! Actually, I’ve done pretty well over the years, but the last two football seasons … it’s been horrible on Sundays and respectable on Saturdays. Obviously, I’m not quitting my night job,” Janison said.
“I’ve enjoyed this contest … one year, Oscar Goodman and I had a spirited debate when we were on opposite sides of a game. We had our own side bet going, and I want to thank him for picking up the tab at dinner!”
Sunny days, indeed!
