Forecasters say rain subsiding in Southern Nevada

Updated Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 | 7:37 p.m.

Heavy rains that prompted flash flood warnings for areas around Las Vegas this evening appear to be weakening, weather officials said.

The warnings issued for the Searchlight and Mount Charleston areas earlier this evening will remain active through about 8:15 p.m., though officials with the National Weather Service said the rains were dying down significantly about 6:45 p.m.

The region was largely spared from heavy flooding, though there is still a chance for mud and debris runoff in and downstream of the Carpenter 1 Fire area due to a lack of vegetation, said NWS forecaster Chris Stumpf.

"It looks like a lot of the (activity) surrounding the valley is starting to decrease to light to moderate showers," Stumpf said. "But some areas still may get some flooding from runoff across the valley."

Motorists, pedestrians, campers and hikers are urged to move to higher ground if they encounter rising water.

Flooding can be reported to the Las Vegas NWS Facebook page or via its Twitter feed.
