New police cameras now dot the Strip

Metro Police are now equipped with the watchful eye of 37 newly installed crime-fighting cameras along the Strip.

Police hope the cameras, which are clearly visible in their locations about 20 to 25 feet in the air, will be both a deterrent to crime and also provide a better vantage point to observe activity within large crowds.

Authorities also hope the cameras will help officers see criminal activity that might be concealed from officers inside patrol cars.

The cameras, purchased through a federal grant, are monitored by police officers stationed at the department’s command center inside the Convention Center. Officers assigned to watch the cameras are on light duty due to injuries on the job.
