Even when a team wins by nearly five touchdowns, a coach will find something to nitpick. Just ask Desert Oasis High coach Scott Staudinger, who found plenty to work on after defeating Valley High at home tonight 46-12.
Most of Staudinger’s criticisms had to do with Desert Oasis’ penalties, which prevented the team from controlling things even more than it already did.
“It’s the one setback we look at as coaches,” Staudinger said, “after playing such a clean game the first time out.”
After committing only three penalties in its first game, Staudinger said, the defense committed seven by itself and the team’s total easily crawled into the teens. So if that’s the negative, what’s the positive? He goes by the name Jacquez Kalili.
Kalili scored six of the team’s seven touchdowns and amassed 266 total rushing yards. The other score was Jake Peterson’s 40-yard interception return.
“You can’t say enough about the two games he’s played for us,” Staudinger said of Kalili. “… He’s given us a dynamic at tailback that we haven’t had.”
Kalili’s performance was great but Staudinger’s emphasis this week is much more likely to focus on those setbacks. Because next week the team hits the road for the first time this season and those penalties could be a much bigger problem at Canyon Springs High than they were tonight.
“We understand that it’s going to be a significant jump in the caliber of team we’re playing,” Staudinger said, “and against them if we have those penalties it’ll be a long night for us.”
