LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

House GOP doesn’t understand hunger

We have a shrinking middle class due to stagnant wages and income disparity as more working-class citizens enter the ranks of poverty, yet the House of Representatives voted to cut funding to the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program. SNAP feeds millions of children, elderly, disabled and veterans. There are people working for minimum wage who rely on food stamps because their salaries cannot possibly cover the monthly bills.

House members who voted to cut food stamps fail to realize the program only provides $1.40 cents per person per meal. Who in the House can survive on that?

Instead, House Republicans who take pride in denying food to others have salaries in excess of $170,000, while still complaining they are suffering from a recessive economy just like other Americans. These are the same House Republicans who wasted millions of dollars voting 42 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act. They espouse pride in their Christian heritage and family values but don’t seem to understand their ideology damages less-fortunate Americans. I will remind Congress there are two quotes attributed to Mahatma Gandhi that are appropriate:

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
