The Metro Police officer involved in a northeast valley shooting on Sunday has been identified as Sgt. James Oaks.

Amid a foot chase, Oaks, 42, shot and injured DeAnthony Brown, 24, after Brown allegedly pointed a gun at officers, police said.

Earlier in the day, Brown and Kevin Lay Jr., 23, were involved in the shooting of a man at an apartment in the 4800 block of Cleopatra Avenue, near Nellis Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue, police said.

Officers spotted what they believed to be the two suspects' car, which failed to stop. The two led police on a car chase, which ended in the area of Trout Lake Avenue, near Pecos and Gowan roads, police said.

Brown and Lay Jr. exited their car and ran in opposite directions.

Brown was shot by Oaks after he pulled a gun when confronted, police said.

As a routine, Oaks has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

He has been employed with Metro since 1990.
