Kickoff 2014:

Cimarron-Memorial’s defense stingy against Cheyenne’s rushing attack

The Cimarron-Memorial High football team surrendered 105 rushing yards in the first quarter Friday against Cheyenne in the Duel of the Desert game.

The remainder of the game, though, Cimarron’s defense tightened to allow just 32 yards on 25 carries, erasing an early two-touchdown deficit for a 21-14 victory.

“We just shut them down,” Cimarron coach John Parcells said.

Parcells could not have asked for a better start to the season. And it has more to do with the win.

The Spartans didn’t stop believing when they fell behind 14-0, learning how to play through adversity and make in-game adjustments.

“I’m real pleased with how the game played out,” Parcells said. “It’s what we needed.”

Derek Morefield passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the comeback. Cimarron tied the game at 14 by halftime and took the lead for good in the third quarter.

Rasaan Mills had four catches for 76 yards, including touchdown receptions of 55 and 6 yards. Maurice Bennett rushed 21 times for 105 yards.

“The way we won was an indication of the desire of this team,” Parcells said.
