Missing Colorado skier found dead after avalanche

Updated Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 | 12:21 p.m.

DILLON, Colo. — A skier missing after an avalanche outside a Colorado ski area has been found dead.

The body of the man in his 40s was found just before noon on Tuesday, about a day after he disappeared following a large avalanche. A second skier was caught in the slide but was able to get out and get help.

He's the 10th person to die in an avalanche nationally this season and the fourth since Sunday.

A snowmobiler died in another avalanche in Colorado on Monday. Two people died after avalanches over the weekend in Utah.

Huge recent snowfall has been luring skiers and snowboarders to Colorado's mountains but has increased the avalanche danger in much of the backcountry. All the new snow means any slides that do occur are large.
