Las Vegas antelope poacher gets 3 years’ probation

ELKO — A 53-year-old Las Vegas man who admitted shooting an antelope without a legal tag has been sentenced to three years' probation and banned from hunting or trapping in Nevada for two years.

Miguel Arias-Montalvo initially was sentenced last week to a year in jail but the sentence was suspended pending completion of the probation as part of an agreement to plead guilty to killing or possessing certain animals without a valid tag.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports he also agreed to forfeit a seized rifle and ammunition to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

He had a valid hunting license and tag but told investigators he didn't realize he was in the wrong place on the map when he shot the antelope along U.S. Highway 93 in September 2010.
