Mother, child in crosswalk are hit by car, police say

A mother and her 3-year-old child survived being hit by a car while walking across the street in the central valley Thursday night, according to Metro Police.

Metro officers initially thought the child had severe head trauma and transported both victims to Sunrise Hospital, where the child's condition was downgraded. The child is expected to survive; the mother suffered minor injuries.

The two were in a crosswalk at 1750 Karen Ave. near Maryland Parkway at around 5:30 p.m. when a sedan struck them, said Metro Lt. John Liberty. The driver of the car stayed on scene, but officers have been unable to determine exactly what happened because the mother and child speak only Spanish.

Translators are en route to the hospital, and the investigation is ongoing, Liberty said.
