RENO — Nevada's "stand your ground" law is in the spotlight with the filing of murder charges against a 73-year-old suspect who says he acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a man and wounded a woman trespassing on his property.
Family and friends of 34-year-old Cody Devine say he thought the woman lived in the run-down home in Sparks where she invited him the night Wayne Burgarello's accused of shooting them Feb. 13.
Debbie Peckham told reporters Wednesday her unarmed son was just "in the wrong place, at the wrong time." She was angry that police initially suggested he was a squatter but she's hoping now justice will be served.
The Rev. Howard Dotson says Burgarello's arrest should serve as a warning assailants can't hide behind Nevada's "stand your ground" law.
