Tony Sanchez’s rebranding campaign at UNLV will ultimately be judged on real wins and losses. Until his first season actually starts, though, Sanchez has been busy selling his Las Vegas-centric vision of the program and on Wednesday he notched another offseason win with the new turf at Sam Boyd Stadium.
The Rebels released a rendering of their home stadium’s new field, which is in the process of being installed, and it includes the same Vegas accents that appear on UNLV’s new uniforms.
Each end zone will have a depiction of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign over a black background, and shapes from the old Stardust sign will outline most yard marks with the Welcome sign's Stardust logo at the 50. The Stardust diamonds also appear on the Rebels’ red and black pants — they also have white uniforms — while the Welcome to Las Vegas logo is on the back of both of UNLV’s new helmets.
Sanchez has pushed Vegas to the forefront in the Rebels’ marketing and recruiting, and he worked with the UNLV Athletics department, in particular graphic artist Ashley Seda, to put the field design together. The response locally and nationally has been almost universally positive and it continues the extra focus Sanchez has brought to the program this offseason.
Now that he has everyone’s attention, it’s almost time to start playing for real.
