At Monday’s Clean Energy Summit, CEO of Valley Electric Association Thomas Husted announced plans to build a 15-megawatt solar energy project in Pahrump.

The project, which will include 54,000 photovoltaic panels across 80 acres, is expected to begin operation on July 1, 2016, and will provide 200 construction jobs.

“We are developing this community solar program to meet the growing demand for alternatives to rooftop photovoltaic systems in our communities,” said Chris Brooks, VEA’s executive vice president of energy services in a statement.

Founded in 1965, the VEA provides power to 45,000 people in 6,800 square miles primarily along the California-Nevada border.

The announcement comes as part of a daylong summit on clean power in Las Vegas. In his opening remarks, Sen. Harry Reid criticized NV Energy’s approach to solar power. President Barack Obama is expected to make closing remarks at the summit this evening.
