Updated Monday, Jan. 26, 2015 | 3:16 p.m.

A 3-year-old boy shot himself in the leg with a handgun Sunday night at a home in the northwest valley, Metro Police said.

Officer Larry Hadfield said the child was shot about 7:20 p.m. in the 9100 block of Sparklewood Court, near Fort Apache Road and West Gowan Road.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center with a nonlife-threatening injury, officials said.

Hadfield says both parents were home at the time, and police are investigating. No arrests were made.

Hadfield says he doesn't immediately know if the weapon was licensed and registered.
