UNLV football player Devonte Boyd (83) pulls in a touchdown pass over Charles Henry (34) during the Spring Showcase, the last official gathering for the Rebels and coach Tony Sanchez before August on Saturday, April 18, 2015.

Two Rebels were named to Phil Steele’s 2015 Preseason All-Mountain West first team, it was announced today. Sophomore receiver Devonte Boyd and senior safety Peni Vea received the honor, with junior running back Keith Whitely and junior Tau Lotulelei named to the fourth team.

Boyd, a Basic High grad, was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year after hauling in 65 catches for 980 yards, both UNLV freshman records. Vea ranked second on the team in tackles (88) with 7.5 tackles for loss and an interception.

A total of 112 players were named to all four preseason teams. UNLV had the fewest representatives of any school in the conference. Boise State and Colorado State have more than four players on the first team alone.

While it serves as an indication of where the Rebels stand in the Mountain West, the good news for first-year coach Tony Sanchez is that games are not decided by preseason honors.
